Charlotte FC isn’t the only professional soccer team in the 704. The Carolina Ascent are making noise during their first season in the USL Super League. The Ascent are currently in first place with 43 points. To earn those 43 points, the club has a record of 12-5-7, including a five game winning streak. The club was announced in May 2023 and the second professional women's sports franchise to play in Charlotte and the first since the Charlotte Sting took over the hardwood in the WNBA.
Not only is the Fortress a stronghold for Charlotte FC, American Legion Memorial Stadium is a stronghold for the ladies representing Carolina Ascent FC. If you can’t make it to see a game in person, you can watch on TV64 or Telemundo if you’re in the Charlotte area.
The team is lead by Philip Pool on the pitch and in the front office. Coach Pool brings experience within his first season on the job. Not only does he have expirence withe the USWNT, he has also been on the staff of the Charlotte Independence. College soccer fans in the Carolinas may be familiar with him as he spent time with Wake Forest, UNCC, and Wingate University. A strong resume indeed.
This season, there is one more chance to cheer the ladies on in person. They welcome Tampa Bay Sun FC for a 7:00 pm kickoff on Saturday, May 17th.
