McGrath injury deals blow to CFC
Club will be without captain for remainder of season
Chattanooga FC on Tuesday announced that club captain Alex McGrath will miss the rest of the season, due to a knee injury. The Englishman picked up the injury late on in CFC’s away draw at Atlanta United 2 on March 30th.
McGrath, who hails from Durham in northern England, subsequently missed the US Open Cup tie with the Red Wolves and last weekend’s home win over Orlando City B. His absence will be hugely felt by both the club and its fans, as McGrath is not only an important influence in the dressing room, but an integral part of Chattanooga’s game-plan on the field.
As outlined in our Season Preview; the 27 year old is arguably the club’s most important player. In 2024 he was in the top 5 CFC players across multiple performance measures including games played (2nd), games started (5th), minutes played (3rd), goals (3rd), assists (3rd), scoring attempts (2nd), shots on target (1st), key passes (1st), and drawing fouls (2nd). His contribution of 12 goals was the highest of any non-attacker.
Just shy of his 100th game for the side, McGrath had started and captained in CFC’s first four matches of the season, providing 1 assist in 382 minutes of play.
Last week, the club announced the signing of left-footed midfielder Colin Thomas, which may provide some coverage for their absent captain.
