A new season of MLS soccer is here as the regular season kicks off on Saturday the 22nd. Charlotte begins their campaign at Lumen Field in Seattle, where they face MLS and western conference power, Seattle Sounders. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 pm EST.
“To be the man, you have to beat the man” and for the Crown to prove they belong among the contenders in the east, a strong preformance against a top team will go a long way. Seattle and Charlotte haven’t played much, but the last time they did, Patrick Agyemang and team captain Ashley Westwood both scored in a match that ended in a 3-3 draw.
I think for Charlotte to win, the keys are defense and goalkeeping. If the boys can create and convert chances, I have faith in the defensive line to hold and Kristian Khalina to carry his spectacular form from last season (where he won Goalkeeper of the Year) into this one. One thing I'll be paying close attention to is on the offensive side of the ball. I think the addition of Zaha adds another dynamic to the attack. I hope the form Pat Agyemang displayed for the USMNT carries over for his club this season. The combination of Zaha and Agyemang can be deadly for the Crown this season and I hope it starts early.
For Seattle, I'm most worried about the goalkeeping. Stefan Frei is a phenomenal talent and a threat to win goalkeeper of the year. If Charlotte can’t finish chances, I'm afraid the combination of Frei and the crowd will create an atmosphere that could be tough for the Crown to overcome. Their midfield is well seasoned and can become a problem. Cristian Roldan has been in the MLS for 10 years (going on his 11th) and his experience can help build up play to set up the attack or organize his men when Seattle is on defense. That can create problems for Charlotte if the guys on the pitch haven’t built up enough chemistry.
A lot can be learned from these early season matchups both by staff and fans. While a win would be excellent, it’s not the end of the world if the result goes the other way. I’m looking to see what line-ups coach Smith decides to go with early this year and what adjustments are made throughout the season. With that being said, I think Charlotte comes away with a hard fought 2-1 with both goals scored by Agyemang and assisted by Zaha.
A new season is always exciting, so remember fans, be loud and support the Crown wherever you are.
